“Unequal Lengths” is the best generic variant for loop genres. I like it so much that I went ahead and applied it to a non-loop genre. I’ve been meaning to try this with shading genres for a while, but a puzzle by @wand_125 reminded me today.
Rules: Shade some cells so that all shaded cells form one orthogonally connected area. Clues cannot be shaded, and every orthogonally connected area of unshaded cells contains exactly one clue, the value of which represents the size of the area. No 2x2 region may be entirely shaded.
Variant: Unequal Lengths — Going around each boundary of the shaded region, no two consecutive straight segments can have the same length.
